Lift London: Priced Out

This week Lift London met Sam, a 35-year-old radiographer working in the NHS. His partner is a nurse. They both have skilled jobs, work hard and contribute to our city every day. 

Yet despite two professional salaries, they still can't afford a place of their own. 

Instead, they live with Sam's partner's parents because buying a home – or even renting somewhere suitable – is simply beyond their reach. 

It's a situation that would have seemed unimaginable just a generation ago. 

Across London, thousands of young professionals are finding themselves in exactly the same position. They're delaying starting families, postponing major life decisions or leaving the capital altogether because housing costs have risen so far beyond what ordinary working people can afford. 

The people caring for us in our hospitals, teaching our children, keeping our transport moving and supporting our communities deserve better than this. 

Housing isn't just about bricks and mortar. It's about independence, security and the chance to build a future. 

London should be a city where hard work opens doors, not one where even essential workers are locked out of the housing market. 

Listening to Sam's story is a reminder that this isn't simply a housing issue. It's about the kind of London we want to be.
