In London, too many people are being priced out of the communities they call home. Rents are soaring, home ownership is out of reach for many, and far too many Londoners are stuck in housing that is unsafe, overcrowded or simply not good enough.

We need to build more homes and we also need to make sure they are the right homes, in the right places, and built to a decent standard. That means more genuinely affordable and social housing, better quality new homes, and investment to make existing homes warmer, safer and cheaper to heat.

That’s why the Liberal Democrats are calling for an increase in social and affordable housebuilding, with councils given the powers and resources they need to build the homes their communities need. We want stronger standards for new developments, with the infrastructure and services – from accessible public transport to schools and GPs – that growing communities need.

London should be a city where young people can afford to stay, families can put down roots, and everyone can have a safe, secure and decent place to call home.
