Lift London: London’s Next Generation
Being young should be a time of opportunity.
A chance to find your feet, start a career, become independent and begin building a life of your own.
But for many young Londoners, those opportunities are becoming harder to find.
This week Lift London spoke to a Londoner who believes his generation has had its chance – and that now we need to make sure the next generation gets theirs.
Young people are entering adulthood at a difficult time. The number not in education, employment or training has been rising, while rapid advances in artificial intelligence are creating uncertainty about what some of the jobs they might once have expected to do will look like in the future.
And getting a job is only part of the challenge.
The cost of housing means that even those who are working can struggle to afford somewhere to live. Buying a first home can seem impossibly distant, while high rents make moving out and establishing an independent life difficult too.
It risks creating a generation who feel that however hard they work, the opportunities enjoyed by those before them are increasingly beyond their reach.
That isn't good for young people and it isn't good for London.
Our city needs the energy, ideas and ambition of the next generation. We need young Londoners to believe they can build their careers here, afford to live here and have a stake in London's future.
That means ensuring young people have access to education and training that prepares them for a changing world of work, opportunities to begin meaningful careers and homes they can realistically afford.
Listening to Londoners reminds us that creating a better London isn't only about improving life today. It's about the kind of city we're leaving to those who come after us.
Our generation has had its opportunities. We need to make sure they have theirs.
Lift London is listening to Londoners, sharing their stories and making sure these challenges aren't ignored.
