Sadiq Khan’s inflation-busting tube fare rises show “Labour has clearly taken our great city for granted”
Tube fares in London will rise by 5.8% - more than inflation and despite a national fare freeze – Labour’s London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan has confirmed.
Commenting, Luke Taylor MP, Spokesman for the Lib Dems in London, said
"Many Londoners rely on the tube network for their daily commute and these fare increases will take chunks out of their hard earned pay check during a cost-of-living crisis, with no improvement in services.”
“From overheating carriages to regularly signalling problems, Labour need to be investing in much needed upgrades to our transport system. Not only has Sadiq Khan failed to make this case to his ‘mates’ in Government, he’s now expecting ordinary working people to stump up the costs instead.”
“London’s success helps boost economic prosperity across the country but Labour has clearly taken our great city for granted. They may be in for a rude awakening next May.
Hina Bokhari, leader of the Lib Dem group on the London Assembly, had previously told The Standard: "If ministers freeze fares everywhere except London, that isn't policy, it's a punishment beating.
“Londoners already face higher living costs and deeper levels of poverty, yet ministers appear to want to single out London for inflation-busting hikes. This isn't levelling the country up, it's levelling the capital down."
