More police to properly investigate sexual offences

Last March Louise Casey’s report into the Metropolitan police showed that they are solving half as many rapes and sexual offences as they were in 2016.

Despite being in charge of the police for eight years, the Mayor said he was shocked by this report. He promised 565 more police working on these terrible crimes.

Yet when Rob Blackie, London Lib Dem Mayoral candidate, asked how many more police have actually been recruited to Rape and Serious Sexual Offences teams, only 156 are in place - just 28% of the promised figure.

It is well known that rape investigators are overwhelmed - meaning slower, less effective investigations.

That’s justice denied to survivors. And, unfortunately, it means more terrible crimes, because up to 40% of rapes are by repeat offenders.
