Lib Dems councillors, council candidates and activists from across London recently met at City Hall to share ideas and put forward plans to tackle the problem of crimes involving moped riders.
Across London many thefts and other offences are taking place by moped riders, with the problem affecting every corner of the capital, although with the crimes extremely prevalent in Camden, Hackney, Haringey, Islington and Westminster.
Between January and September of 2017 there were almost 18,000 crimes involving moped across London as a whole.
Meeting with the Liberal Democrat London Assembly Member Caroline Pidgeon, who has previously uncovered figures showing a steep rise in this kind of crime, a number of ideas were discussed to help tackle the issue ranging from the greater use of smart water through to the police having more motorbikes to effectively chase and tackle people committing crimes on moped.
Commenting on the need to tackle moped crime Caroline Pidgeon said:
“Crimes involving mopeds have become one of the biggest scourges of crime in many parts of the capital. Finding new tactics to prevent and stop these crimes on our streets is essential.
“We need to ensure these figures are quickly reversed, to ensure our streets are safer for both residents and the visitors and tourists to London.”
