The annual Orpington Dinner was first held in 2008 and the Orpington Fund exists to support Liberal Democrat candidates in Westminster by-elections. This year’s dinner is a special Golden Jubilee Dinner to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of Lord Steel’s by-election victory in March 1965 and his subsequent fifty years in Parliament.
Speakers include Baroness Shirley Williams, Lord Wallace of Tankerness, Lord Avebury, Mr Peter Soal (former M.P. for Johannesburg North) and Lord Steel himself. The Deputy Prime Minister will say a few words at the reception.
The venue is the National Liberal Club, 6.45 p.m. for 7.30 p.m. and the cost of £60 includes the drinks reception and a three course meal with wine.
This promises to be one of Liberal Democrat political events of the year and London Liberal Democrats are invited.
