Merlene Emerson

Merlene moved to London over 30 years ago as a student, graduating in law from Kings College London and with a Master of Laws from Cambridge.  She practised as a solicitor at a firm in the City and worked on cross border finance and international joint ventures.

Merlene subsequently retrained as a CEDR accredited commercial mediator and as a restorative justice practitioner and has been engaged in offering pro bono community mediation advice through CALM Mediation.

Since 2007 Merlene has served on the boards of 3 Housing Associations and is currently the Chair of Lien Viet Housing Association and Director of Islington and Shoreditch Housing Association.

Merlene became active in politics 10 years ago in part to address the lack of representation of those from Chinese and SE Asian background in UK politics.  She co-founded Chinese Liberal Democrats in 2006 and supports organisations such as Operation Black Vote, Fawcett Society and BC Project.

She is keen to use her professional skills and experience on the London Assembly for all Londoners, delivering new housing that is socially sustainable, more jobs and apprenticeships for young people and efficient and greener public transport.

Merlene is married with 3 sons and holds a British Wheel of Yoga teaching diploma.
