Later he worked for the Open University, teaching courses on computers and computing.
He has been active in the Liberal Democrats locally, as a committee member, local campaigner and as a candidate for Havering council since the mid-1990s. . Ian was the LibDem candidate for Romford in the 2015 General Election. He was a School Governor for twenty years. He is Vice-Chair (Engineering) of the Association of Liberal Democrat Engineers and Scientists
Ian says: ‘I’ve lived most of my life in Havering and shared the experiences of local people. My children went to state schools here and then went on to university. The NHS looks after my family’s health. I commuted by rail into London for decades. Romford is my local town. Local politicians who have narrow-minded and inward-looking views sell Havering and Redbridge short. I look forward for a time when Havering and Redbridge become more outward-looking and take their rightful place in London, England and Europe.’
