Before becoming Mayor of London Sadiq Khan never stopped telling people he was the son of a bus driver.
I think few people thought that he would then go on to cut bus services in every part of London – yet that is exactly what he is doing! The full details of just the most recent bus changes can be seen here. Sadly, more cuts in services are planned and without any consultation beforehand.
Over the last 15 years London’s bus network has bucked the national trend and seen real improvements, but now Sadiq Khan is planning to cut the total mileage of London’s buses by 7 per cent. Across the whole of London we are now seeing longer gaps between buses.
These changes are short sighted and need to be reversed. If we are to cut congestion in London and tackle air pollution we need to make it easier for people to reduce their car use. Clean buses have a vital role to play.
Southwark Liberal Democrats are already taking the lead, campaigning against the halving of the zero emission RV1 bus route (which runs through Southwark, Lambeth, Westminster and Tower Hamlets). Details of their excellent campaign can be seen here. Similar campaigns are now needed across London.
