It would be horrible to lock people up in police cells if they were found on the streets suffering from a broken leg. But historically that's exactly what has happened when people are having a mental health crisis.
That's why the Liberal Democrats want to make sure that nobody does get locked up in a police cell when they have a mental health problem. And we have some good news in new statistics we have just got from the Metropolitan Police.
All of us will at some point in our lives either suffer a mental illness, or have a close friend or relative who does.
In the past there has been huge stigma against mental illness, something which is starting to change. We Lib Dems are proud of our part in the fight to cure mental illnesses, but there is a lot more to be done.
So we need your help to make sure that mental health is taken seriously in all the ways that government, and we as a society, can improve things. Whether it’s treatment on the NHS, making it easier for people to get back into jobs after an illness, or reducing the stigma that sufferers encounter every day, we would like your ideas about how we do this.
What issues do you think we should prioritise?
