"Far too many young lives are being destroyed by an epidemic of knife crime, and Sajid Javid’s Knife Crime Prevention Orders will do nothing to stop it." - Ed Davey MP
Today, the House of Commons will be debating the Conservative Government's Offensive Weapons Bill, which includes their controversial and widely criticised knife crime prevention orders.
Ahead of the debate, Liberal Democrat Home Affairs Spokesperson Ed Davey said:
“Far too many young lives are being destroyed by an epidemic of knife crime, and Sajid Javid’s Knife Crime Prevention Orders will do nothing to stop it.
“They are essentially a new form of the failed ASBO and will unnecessarily criminalise children, who could be sent to prison even if they’ve never been caught with a knife or committed any crime.
“The Liberal Democrats demand better for the victims of knife crime and their families. We will oppose these knife-ASBOs and put forward a better solution: Anti-Blade Contracts.
“These new ABCs would replicate the success of Acceptable Behaviour Contracts. A young person would sign a contract saying ‘I will not carry a knife’, with clear consequences such as bigger fines or tougher community sentences if they break it. In return, they would receive education and guarantees about services to help them feel safer.”
