Moped Crime "scourge" in many parts of London

"Crimes involving mopeds are rapidly becoming the biggest scourge in many parts of the capital. Finding new tactics to prevent and stop these crimes on our streets is essential." - Caroline Pidgeon.

The increasing problem of crime committed by moped riders has been revealed today in figures obtained by the Liberal Democrat London Assembly Caroline Pidgeon.

Following her questioning of the Mayor figures have been released showing that in just nine months there have been 17,606 ‘moped enabled’ crimes in London.

The figures reveal that moped raiders are affecting every London Borough,  although the crimes at present are heavily dominant in Camden, Islington and Westminster.

  • 17,606 moped recorded offences since the start of the year in London
  • Camden saw 4147 moped offences since January
  • In June alone moped raiders struck 749 times in Camden and 626 times in Islington

Commenting on the latest figures Caroline Pidgeon said:

“Crimes involving mopeds are rapidly becoming the biggest scourge in many parts of the capital. Finding new tactics to prevent and stop these crimes on our streets is essential."

“We need to ensure there figures are quickly reversed, to ensure our streets are safer for both local residents and the huge number of visitors and tourists that come to Camden, Islington and Westminster.”
